[coupon couponid=”loop” category=”CityPage” coupon_align=”cctor_aligncenter” name=”Coupon Loop”]Many cities in the Midwest saw their fortunes rise and fall with the success and failure of various industries. The city of Griffith, Indiana is no different. Despite the fact that Griffith has weathered several storms, it continues to be a prosperous and popular place to live. Being close to the hustle and bustle of Chicago certainly helps. Residents enjoy a nice variety of services and many commute to and from Chicago for work daily. The town is small enough to have a fairly close-knit feel, making it a popular place to raise a family.
History of Griffith
Griffith was originally developed following the passage of the Swamp Reclamation Act of 1853, which gave people incentives to settle and develop the land. With supplies provided by the government, new arrivals from all over the country – and sometimes the world – were able to turn the wet, marshy terrain into fertile farmland.
Most people agree that the founders of the town were Jay and Elmer Dwiggins. The pair were speculators and land developers. They had big dreams for their town, which they originally wanted to call Dwiggins Junction. However, they were never quite able to get the kind of financial backing they needed to bring those dreams to fruition.
Things plugged along nicely for Griffith until the Panic of 1893, which threw a kink in the works. Powering through, the town became a major railroad hub and it was officially incorporated in 1904. Since then, the population of Griffith has grown slowly but steadily, and the city has fared a lot better than places like Gary, Indiana.
Griffith is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It’s bordered by Hammond to the northwest, Calumet Township to the east, Highland to the west, Gary to the northeast and Schererville to the south. It stretches over an area of 7.73 square miles.
Like many communities that are located near the shores of Lake Michigan, Griffith experiences lake-effect snowstorms on a regular basis. As a result, the city receives an average of 25.8 inches of snow per year. It also receives an average of 35 inches of rain annually. The average high in July is 84 degrees, and the weather gets very humid during the summer. The average low in January is 15.6 degrees.
When the 2010 U.S. Census was taken, the population of Griffith was 16,893. It is estimated that the population has declined a little since then. At the time of the census, there were 6,668 households and the homeownership rate was 67.3 percent. The population was 75.8 percent white and 16.9 percent black. As for the median household income, it was $55,574.
