When the summer heat becomes unbearable, your air conditioner becomes your best friend. But have you ever wondered what’s happening behind the scenes to create that refreshing cool air? Understanding how your AC works can help you maintain it better, spot potential issues early, and make informed decisions about repairs or replacements.
At Meyer’s Companies, our certified technicians have been keeping homes in Northwest Indiana comfortable since 1951. We know air conditioners inside and out, and we’re here to pass on some of our knowledge so you can get the most out of your system.
The cooling process starts when warm air from your home is pulled into your air conditioning system through return ducts. These ducts carry the air to your indoor unit, where the magic begins.
Once inside the system, the warm air passes over a cold evaporator coil. The evaporator coil contains a special chemical called refrigerant. As the warm air flows over the coil, the refrigerant absorbs heat and humidity from the air, cooling it down in the process.
The refrigerant inside the evaporator coil changes from a liquid to a gas as it absorbs heat. This heat transfer is what cools the air. The now-cooled air is then pushed back into your home through supply ducts, lowering the temperature in your living space.
The refrigerant, now carrying the absorbed heat in its gaseous state, travels to the outdoor unit, also known as the condenser. This is where the heat is released to the outside.
In the outdoor unit, the heated refrigerant flows through the condenser coil. A fan blows outdoor air over the coil, helping release the heat the refrigerant is carrying. As the refrigerant cools down, it changes back into a liquid.
The refrigerant, now a liquid again, travels back to the indoor evaporator coil, ready to absorb more heat. This cycle continues until your home reaches your desired temperature, keeping you cool and comfortable.
During the cooling process, several issues can arise that affect the efficiency and performance of your air conditioning system. Here are some common problems to watch for:
