Do you have a mysterious toilet leak? If so, you need to take a closer look and see if you have a cracked tank. In some cases, you can fix the cracks. In other cases, you may need to replace the tank. A cracked toilet can cause leaks or even a blow-out that can cause flood damage in the bathroom and surrounding areas. If it happens when you are not home, the damage could be extensive.
Here are some things to look for on your cracked toilet before calling in a professional.
Outside the Tank
The first cracks most people notice are the ones on the outside. Examine these closely to see if they may be causing a problem.
- Hairline cracks on the top are usually cosmetic.
- Hairline cracks further down are usually repairable.
- Larger cracks anywhere on the tank mean you need to replace the toilet.
Inside the Tank
Drain the toilet tank. Turn off the tap beneath and flush until the tank is to the lowest level possible. Take a look inside and see if you can see any cracks.
- Hairline cracks on the top edge are usually cosmetic.
- Hairline cracks below the water line can usually be repaired with epoxy.
- Larger cracks below the water line mean you need to replace the entire toilet.
Repairing a hairline crack involves using silicone plumbing epoxy on the inside of the tank. Drain the tank completely, using towels to remove all excess moisture. Let the toilet stand for a day or two with the lid off. The inside of the tank must be completely dry before applying the epoxy. Follow directions for applying the epoxy. Allow it to dry at least 24 hours, or the time recommended by the manufacturer. Fill the tank and test the repair.
