The Great HVAC System Debate: To Repair Or Replace

Furnace repair

If problems with your home’s HVAC system have begun to happen more often than they used to, it’s time to evaluate whether it makes more sense to repair or replace. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to the question of which option is more cost-effective, but there are general guidelines that can make it easier to make the best decision to suit your particular circumstances. Factors to consider as you weigh your options include:

Equipment Age

If your air conditioner or heat pump is more than 10 years old or your furnace or boiler is over 15, chances are that replacement is your better option. Equipment of that age is likely nearing the end of its expected lifespan, and it’s sure to cost more to run than newer, more energy-efficient models.

On the other hand, if your equipment is fairly new, repair might be the more cost-effective option, especially if there is still a warranty in place or the repairs are fairly minor ones. Having a reliable HVAC contractor look over its condition can help you make the best call.

Necessary Repairs

When deciding whether to repair or replace, the type of repairs required is an important consideration. For instance, compressor replacement in an A/C system or putting a new heat exchanger in a furnace are major, costly repairs. In a system that is no longer under warranty, whole system replacement is likely your better option. Additionally, when such major problems occur, they can be an indication of poor maintenance or excessive wear, which can mean more problems are brewing.

However, if repairs are minor and the system is in good shape otherwise, repair may be best. A good rule of thumb is that if the cost of repairs in a well-maintained system is less than half of what it would cost to replace it, fixing it may be worthwhile.
