How to Prepare Your Home’s Plumbing for the Holidays

With fall here, the holiday season is approaching. Many of us will be hosting holiday gatherings during the next few months as we celebrate Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and more. In preparation for this, we need to make sure our homes are ready to handle extra traffic, including family, friends, and friends of friends.

One part of your home that will be under more pressure than normal is your plumbing system. You’ll be cooking more, more people will be using your bathrooms, overnight guests will be using your showers, and the cold of fall and winter could put your pipes in danger of bursting.

That is why it is so important to prepare your plumbing for the holiday season. No one wants to have to deal with a clogged toilet, broken garbage disposal, flooded basement, or burst pipe in the middle of a holiday gathering.

Tips for Preparing Your Home’s Plumbing for the Holidays

Few things can bring a holiday gathering to a halt like a plumbing problem. If you don’t want that to happen during your holiday gatherings, here are a few tips for how to prepare your home’s plumbing for the holidays:

  • Flush Check – Make sure to check all your toilets to ensure they are flushing well. When you check them, look out for leaks, water pressure/supply issues, and clogs. You should pay special attention to the toilets that your guests will be using most frequently. You should also think about putting one-ply toilet paper in those bathrooms, because it’s less likely to cause your toilet to clog. In addition, make sure to put trashcans in your bathrooms so that guests will be less likely to try to flush items down your toilets that they shouldn’t, including tissues, paper towels, and other garbage.
  • Clear Drains – Check your kitchen sink, showers, bathroom sinks, and bathtub drains. Make sure that they’re not draining slowly. This could be the sign of a clog or other issue. If any of them are draining slowly, it may be best to reach out to a plumber to check the drain out instead of trying to clear it yourself. Drain cleaners and other do-it-yourself solutions are often temporary and don’t treat the main cause of the problem. A plumber can determine the source of the problem and provide a long term solution.
  • Clean Garbage Disposal – Holiday meals are some of the best meals you’ll have all year. However, with so much food preparation and disposal taking place in your kitchen, you need to make sure your garbage disposal is up to the task. Clean it thoroughly and if it is giving you any problems, have it checked out by a plumber before the holiday festivities get underway. A broken, clogged, or smelly garbage disposal is the last thing you want to have to deal with during the holiday season.
