Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling My House?

Is your Indiana home’s air conditioner not cooling? In the hot summer months, this problem can be a real burden on your family’s comfort. When your air conditioner fails to cool, follow these troubleshooting steps which may be able to solve the issue quickly and easily.

Check Your Thermostat

Your thermostat is the key to communicating with your home’s cooling system. If it’s not working properly or isn’t set correctly, it can result in an air conditioner not cooling.

  • First check to see that the thermostat has power. Make sure the electrical connection is powered if your thermostat is hard-wired, or check the batteries in your battery-powered thermostat.
  • Then make sure the thermostat is set to cooling mode.
  • Lastly, check to see that the thermostat’s temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. If it’s set too high, your air conditioner won’t be signaled to turn on and cool the home.

Replace the Air Filter

A clogged air filter may be the culprit behind an air conditioner not cooling. Obstructions of any sort prevent airflow, which can reduce your air conditioner’s ability to cool your home.

  • Check your air filter to see if it’s dirty or obstructed.
  • Replace the air filter with a clean filter of the same size. If your current filter’s reusable, clean it according to the manufacturer’s specifications and replace.

Clear Condenser Obstructions

Obstructions around your exterior unit can be a cause of an air conditioner not cooling. These obstructions can block airflow, causing your air conditioner to not cool the home as effectively as it should.

  • Inspect your exterior condensing unit for obstructions, which may include yard waste, vegetation or other debris.
  • Remove any obstructions to restore airflow to the exterior condenser. Make it a point to regularly trim vegetation and clean up yard waste and toys which may become problems.
