Replacing batteries in a wall thermostat is an easy job, and if you add the task to your regular annual maintenance list, you’ll avoid a surprise at the most inconvenient time.
How to Replace Thermostat Batteries
If you have a programmable thermostat, it likely runs on AA, AAA or 3V lithium batteries. When these batteries die, the thermostat loses any programmed settings, and the heating and cooling system can stop working or may operate without switching off at set times.
To prevent this, plan to regularly change the thermostat batteries to ensure they don’t die or keep checking the battery indicator on the controls to see when the digital display gives a low battery power warning.
Replacing thermostat batteries is a fairly simple task if you follow these tips:
- Pull the wall thermostat box off its mount plate.
- Turn the box over and locate the battery slots. Use a small screwdriver to pry out the old batteries and remove them entirely.
- Put the new batteries into slots with + sign facing upward, unless the thermostat is marked differently.
- Place the wall thermostat box back into the mount housing and slide down until it snaps back into place.
If the thermostat batteries do die, you can expect a blank screen on the wall thermostat, and the heating and cooling system likely won’t respond to any programs.
