Signs It Is Time to Schedule Furnace Maintenance with Meyers Companies

It’s been a long cold winter. If your hard-working furnace seems like it isn’t working quite as well as it did at the beginning of the winter, it might be time for a tune-up. If you think it may be time to consider schedule a maintenance visit from one of the skilled professional technicians at Meyer’s, but aren’t quite sure, there are a few questions you can ask yourself first:

  • Gas pilot of a furnaceWhen Was It Done Last? If you have an older furnace, or haven’t had a recent inspection, it’s probably time to schedule a check-up.

  • Are Your Heating Costs Rising? – The cost of fuel normally rises in the winter, but if you’re seeing your heating bills going up more than normal, it could be a sign that you need a new furnace.

  • Have You Had Recent Repairs – Furnace repairs become more frequent as the unit reaches the end of its life. If you’ve had repairs done in the past two years, or had a hard time getting parts, it could be a sign that your furnace needs more than simple maintenance.

  • Are You Staying Warm? – If your furnace is running, but it isn’t putting out enough heat to keep you warm, it could be a sign of a clogged or failing system that needs your attention right away.

  • Change in Burner Flame – A healthy gas flow will result in a blue flame in the gas burner. Poor flow can result in a yellow or flickering flame, which can also be a sign of dangerous carbon monoxide gas buildup.

  • Moisture in the House – Moisture on cold surfaces, rusting of flue pipes or pipe connections, water leaking from the chimney or vent, or rust on the vent pipe can be signs of gas buildup.

  • Unexplained Illness – If you find that members of your household are complaining of headaches, nausea, burning of the eyes, nose, or throat, or are experiencing flu-like symptoms for extended periods, it could be caused by gas build-up in the home, potentially because of a cracked heat exchanger in a gas furnace, which can be very serious is not taken care of.
