Can Summer Heat Cause Plumbing Problems?

When preparing our homes for summer weather, one area that is often overlooked is our home’s plumbing. It’s understandable because when we think about getting our houses ready for summer, our focus is usually on keeping our homes cool, which involves our air conditioning systems. However, if we’re not careful, we can leave our plumbing vulnerable to heat-related issues that require expensive repairs.

Common Summer Plumbing Problems

The way we use our homes differs from season to season. The same goes for our home’s plumbing. Because the way we use our home’s plumbing changes from season to season, so do some of the plumbing issues we face.

Here are a few of the most common summer plumbing problems:

  • Washing Machine Leaks – Summer weather provides the perfect environment for a more active lifestyle. You and your family will probably be outside more than ever, including trips to the pool, backyard BBQs, vacations, workouts, and evening walks. Because of this, you will have more laundry to do, which can lead to your washing machine working overtime to keep up. The more you use your washing machine, the higher the chances that your washing machine’s hose will wear down and spring a leak. This can result in an increase in your water bill and even flooding.
  • Clogged Garbage Disposal – Summer is often a time for gathering. You may have a big increase in guests visiting your home for cookouts and other events. The more guests and meals you have in your home, the more waste you will likely put in your garbage disposal. Over time, this can result in clogs developing. An effective way to avoid (or at least delay) this is to let your sink faucet’s water run for a bit before and after you use your garbage disposal.
  • Damaged Sprinkler Systems – With more guests passing through your home, your lawn will see more foot track than usual. This can lead to sprinkler heads getting damaged. In addition, you will probably be using your sprinklers more to keep your yard watered and protected from the summer heat. All this additional wear and tear can result in leaks, which will likely lead to a spike in your water bill.
