3 Tips for Preparing Your Furnace for Winter

Now that fall is here, winter is just around the corner. Still, many of us haven’t had to fire up our heaters yet, but those days are coming. Before the cold weather settles in, there is something we should all do. We need to make sure that our furnaces are ready to go and prepared to keep our homes and businesses toasty all winter long.

3 Ways to Get Your Furnace Ready for Winter

Your furnace has probably been off for months. Expecting it to just click back on and get right back to business without any issues may be asking too much, especially if your furnace is getting long in the tooth. Here are three tips to help you make sure your furnace is ready to take on winter and won’t leave you hanging when you need it most:

  1. Check your thermostat – Before you need the heat, you should test it out. Switch your thermostat to the heat setting and set the temperature a few degrees higher than the temperature is in your home. If the heat turns on like normal, you’re probably good. If it doesn’t turn on, you should have a professional check out your HVAC unit and furnace.
  2. Test the ignitors – Older furnaces have pilot lights. Newer furnaces have ignitors. If the ignitor isn’t working, try pressing the reset button. If that doesn’t work, check the breaker. If the ignitor still isn’t working after that, it’s time to call in a pro to get it and your furnace up and running properly.
  3. Have your heat exchanger cleaned – Your furnace has a heat exchanger, which should be cleaned and checked by a professional before you start using it to heat your home. If a heat exchanger isn’t properly cleaned, it can result in serious issues, including carbon monoxide poisoning.

You should also check the carbon monoxide detectors in your home because if a furnace malfunctions, it may begin filling your home with carbon monoxide. In addition, it’s best to have an HVAC technician make sure your furnace is prepared for winter. They will know exactly what to look for and can ensure your furnace is ready to go once the cold weather rolls in.
