Standard gas furnaces are an important part of the heating solution for many residences and businesses in the state of Indiana, and as the cold weather season approaches, it’s worthwhile to know about some of the causes of poor performance in a gas furnace and how to troubleshoot them.

No Heat Produced by the Furnace

This could simply mean that the thermostat is set too low or isn’t actually set to heat mode. Check to make sure the furnace is set to heat mode, and if so, try turning the thermostat up 10 degrees higher to see if it kicks on. The circuit breaker could be tripped, in which case you’ll have to reset it. If none of these are the problem, check to see if the pilot light is out.

Gas Furnace Turns On and Off Too Often

A dirty air filter could be the problem here, in which case you can clean or replace it. If the thermostat or blower motor isn’t operating correctly, you may want to schedule a check-up with a qualified technician.

Noisy Operation

If the noise is a high-pitched squeal, it could be a slipping blower belt that needs tightening or replacement, or motor bearings that need lubrication. A lower-pitched noise may indicate that the pilot light is poorly adjusted, or you have dirty gas burners. For either of the last two problems, you’ll likely need professional help.

Gas Furnace Doesn’t Produce Enough Heat

When your furnace doesn’t produce enough heat, something may be blocking heat distribution or air intake. Check the air filter for clogging and the air supply to the combustion chamber. If both of these appear normal, the gas burners could be dirty or need adjustment, and in that case a technician will be needed for service.
